Media and technology are at the very center of all our lives today — especially our children’s. Kids today spend over 50 hours of screen time every week. The media content they consume and create has a profound impact on their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. Learning how to use media and technology wisely is an essential skill for life and learning in the 21st century. But parents, teachers, and policymakers struggle to keep up with the rapidly changing digital world in which our children live and learn.
The movies can play a much bigger role in children education especially in their phase when they are in the earlier years and are building the reading habits. At that stage, movies can augment the reading effort that they put in. The movies especially the biographical ones as well as those based on historical events can well be understood by everyone at any age. We know of some schools which have formally introduced movies to augment the teaching effort. We came across a story in the newspaper some time back which mentioned about a school at Bangalore whose faculty has started using selected movies on regular basis in the curriculum.Movies from Bollywood –
- Chak De India
- Lagaan
- Koi Mil Gaya
- Iqbal
- I am Kalam
- Taare Zameen Par
- Stanley Ka Dabba
- Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke
- Anjali
- Chillar Party
Before giving these movies to the children, couple of my recommendation would be -Watch the movie for yourself if you have not watched before so that you know about the movie and its contents Once you have watched the movie yourself, then watch it along with children After watching the movie, you can have a discussion with children on takeaways from the movie, the best part they liked, etc.
One important point to remember is that not all these movies are fit with each age group. Some movies may be good for all whereas some of the movies may be good for elder children. You can decide accordingly.
Achieving a healthy approach to media and technology can make a big difference in kids’ lives today. Kids who learn to use digital media wisely can accomplish amazing things — learn new skills, explore new worlds, build new ideas, and change the world. Yet every kid has different needs. As parents and educators, we know our kids best. If you have recommendations about any movie, please share the names along with couple of lines…. we will capture your suggestions in the blog. I strongly feel that we need to have some initiative around Movies In Education wherein movies can be leveraged to play a bigger and important role in taking the delivery of education to the farthest nooks and corners of the country. Looking forward to your thoughts !!!!…
